An old system we have kicking about has 4 DIMM slots on the motherboard, and can take a maximum of 16 GB. Would I see a difference depending on how I filled the slots? Would 2x 8GB RAM sticks, with two slots left unoccupied, perform better or worse than 4x 4GB sticks occupying all the slots? It depends on the CPU and motherboard you have. Most computers these days have dual channel memory access. Therefore you should know which slots on the motherboard are for channel 0 and which are for channel 1 (if there are more than 2 RAM slots).

Dec 15, 2013 · depends on the CPU, if its DUAL Channel then pick the 2x8GB. If its QUAD channel, which I really doubt, then use 4 sticks. When installing the sticks check the motherboard manual for which slots to install them in.
